Hello there, my name is Brandon Young and I founded Y Design Workshop in 2012 as a collaborative architecture and design studio focused on providing compelling, functional and sustainable solutions. After completing a Master of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin, I began work at Everton Oglesby Architects (EOA), a mid-size regional firm located in Nashville, Tennessee. While at EOA, I gained experience on a broad range of project types including commercial, institutional, multi-family residential, mixed-use and residential. I was instrumental in the design and coordination of several projects (including a $40 million mixed-use development), documentation process for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, development of firm-wide benchmarks for best practices in sustainable design and construction, and implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) throughout the firm’s workflow.

In January 2008, my family and I packed our bags and moved to Abilene, Texas where I began teaching architecture and design at Abilene Christian University. I am currently an assistant professor at the university teaching design studios and construction/detailing courses. I am passionate about public interest architecture and seek opportunities to engage students with the community through design. My students have worked on master plans for a mixed-income housing development in a marginalized neighborhood and assisted with the construction of a compressed earth block house for a low income family in the same neighborhood.

Prior to practicing architecture and teaching, I worked as a graphic designer in both Abilene and Austin, Texas, and was a teaching assistant at UT’s School of Architecture fabrication shop. As a graphic designer, I developed visual communication and presentation skills. Working in a shop provided invaluable experience understanding the relationship between design and construction, production efficiency and responsible use of resources.

The best part of the story is my family. I have been married to my beautiful wife Jana for 15 years and we have three children: Rowan (9), Skylar (6) and Larkin (2). Spending time with these folks is the best part of my life. I am a cyclist, an amateur beekeeper and backyard chicken farmer, enjoy playing guitar and mandolin in my garage with friends, and like to build things (furniture, houses, chicken coops, whatever).

I am currently the only LEED Accredited Professional in Building Design & Construction (LEED BD+C) in Abilene. While any project can successfully employ sustainable principles and practices without third-party certification, the LEED rating systems provide a valuable metric for evaluating and measuring the impact of design and construction. You can read more about sustainable design and LEED here.
